My name is Dana Whiston and I am a translator. I currently work as in-house for international market intelligence agency Mintel in London while also pursuing a range of other projects.

In January 2020, I sat the Diploma in Translation at the Chartered Institute of Linguists and passed all three parts while gaining a distinction for my translation of a German-language business text to English and a merit for my translation of a general German-language text to English.

Before that, I attained the degree of AKAD-approved translator for German and English after a 2-year-course in translation at AKAD University in Stuttgart.

As a translator, I have been working with all kinds of companies, producing translations for a wide range of texts - from marketing material and product content to customer service emails and technology blog content. 

I like to ponder linguistic questions in my spare time, but enjoy creative work just as much - be it making dresses, drawings or doughnuts, and have wide-ranging interests in sci-fi/dystopian novels and electronic music. 

In order to give an overview of what type of translation I offer, this page lists some of my more recent translations. 

Why does a translator need a philosophy? 

I think a strong belief in what you do as a translator and its underlying principles is necessary to achieve a translation of outstanding quality. 

I believe translation is not just conveying a message in another language, but also trying to capture and transfer subtext and imagery. 

Searching for exactly the right words to achieve an appropriate and native-sounding translation is one of the most fascinating and joyful undertakings for me. 

Reading and writing as well as pondering the nature of certain words and utterances have always been favourite passtimes of mine. 

I therefore take great pride in good grammar, carefully-evaluated diction and appropriate register. 

As well as translating texts of a more general nature, due to my professional background, I can offer translation particularly in the following fields:

• Tax/financial accounting (including annual financial statements)
• Tax regulations (VAT, income tax, corporate taxes)

While I largely offer translation from English into German, I can also provide translation from German to English if needed. Additionally, I proofread German texts to help ensure perfect grammar and spelling and make suggestions on word choice and tone where appropriate to facilitate legibility and improve expression.
